Don't Dump It!

Are you planning on making home improvements or doing some spring cleaning?  These Englewood businesses can help recycle items you shouldn’t dump down the drain or put in a landfill.

Paint:

GreenSheen Paint not only re-uses the paint itself, but they also recycle the cans.  When I brought my paint to their facility on Dartmouth, GreenSheen’s staff helped me unload the cans and put them in their recycling facility.

According to founder and president Kevin Callahan, “In 2016 we processed 2.4 million pounds of products, made up of paint, the containers it was packaged in, and the means by which the customer transported it to us (cardboard boxes, pallets, drums, etc.). Of the paint we received, 98.61% of it was recycled into premium quality latex paint.  If you look at the whole of what we received, 87.6% was either recycled or re-purposed.”

GreenSheen Paint anticipates that their 2017 year-end volumes will be close to double their 2016 amount.

Their product, GreenSheen Eco-Friendly Paint, is primarily shipped out to Habitat for Humanity ReStore retail stores across the country. The money these retail stores generate helps Habitat for Humanity bring decent housing to those in need.

Antifreeze, Oil, Car batteries:

I brought several jugs of antifreeze and motor oil to Advance Auto Parts on Broadway.  At this location, coolant is contained in a locked, fenced-in barrel outside and the motor oil is in a large, dumpster-sized container inside a garage.  Their helpful staff will provide access to the receptacles.  Once the motor oil is poured in to the vat, you’re required to take the containers elsewhere for disposal, as they are flammable.

In addition to coolant and motor oil, Advance also safely recycles car batteries, which contain heavy metals and toxic chemicals.

Concrete, Wood, Asphalt:

Owner/president John Kent estimates that Oxford Recycling recycles approximately ½ million tons of concrete, wood and asphalt per year.  Concrete and asphalt is crushed on-site and recycled to become new road base, particles to fill behind retaining walls, or rocks for truck tracking at construction sites.  The untreated, unpainted wood, including branches and leaves, is shredded and made in to mulch.

I brought a pickup truck full of concrete chunks and it cost only $30 - comparable or even less than bringing to a landfill.  Fees are listed on their website, at http://oxfordrecycling.com/recycling-options.html.
